Most parents assume that gifted programme entry is determined almost entirely by a test score. Get a high enough number on the CogAT or SAGES, and you're in. Fall short, and you're not. The reality is considerably more nuanced — and understanding what schools are actually looking for significantly changes how you approach the process.

The shift toward multi-criteria identification

Over the past two decades, school districts across the United States have moved away from single-score cutoffs and toward what researchers call "multi-criteria identification." This means using several different types of evidence to build a complete picture of a child's potential, rather than making a binary decision based on one test on one day.

The National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) actively advocates for multi-criteria approaches, arguing that they identify gifted students more equitably — particularly those from underrepresented groups, English language learners, and twice-exceptional students (those who are gifted and also have learning differences). The result is that most well-run gifted programmes today use between three and six different criteria in their identification process.

The criteria most schools use

1. Cognitive ability test scores

The CogAT, SAGES, NNAT, or similar standardised reasoning assessment is still the most commonly used primary criterion. It provides an objective, nationally normed measure of reasoning ability that can be compared across students from different schools, teachers, and backgrounds. For most programmes, a strong cognitive ability score remains the single most important factor in the identification decision.

2. Achievement test scores

Many districts use standardised achievement tests — state assessments, the Iowa Assessments, or similar — alongside cognitive ability tests. High achievement scores in reading and mathematics, particularly when combined with high reasoning scores, present a compelling case for a student's readiness for gifted programming. The distinction matters: cognitive ability tests measure how a child thinks; achievement tests measure what they have learned. Both together give a more complete picture.

3. Teacher recommendations and observations

Teachers who work with a child daily observe things no test captures: the quality of a child's questions, how they approach novel problems, their persistence when challenged, the depth of their thinking during discussion, and how they relate to peers intellectually. Most programmes use structured teacher rating scales (such as the Scales for Rating the Behavioral Characteristics of Superior Students, SRBCSS) rather than free-form recommendations — these give more consistent, comparable data.

This is worth emphasising: a strong teacher rating can meaningfully support a case for gifted programming even when test scores fall slightly below a threshold. Conversely, a borderline test score accompanied by a strong teacher recommendation and high achievement scores is often sufficient for identification.

4. Academic grades and classroom performance

Consistently exceptional classroom performance — particularly in subjects that require higher-order thinking — is evidence of both ability and the motivation to apply it. Most programmes don't use grades as a standalone criterion, but they feature in the overall portfolio review.

5. Parent questionnaires and home observations

Many districts ask parents to complete a structured questionnaire describing their child's characteristics and learning behaviours at home. This captures information that may not be visible in a classroom setting — unusual depth of interest in specific topics, early reading, complex questioning, unusual memory for detail, or the ability to sustain attention on self-chosen challenges far beyond what's typical for their age.

These questionnaires are most useful when parents provide specific, concrete observations rather than general claims. "She independently read a book about the formation of stars and then asked why nuclear fusion produces helium rather than oxygen" is far more useful evidence than "she's always been very bright."

6. Portfolio and work samples

Some programmes — particularly arts-integrated or project-based gifted programmes — review samples of a child's work as part of the identification process. This might include creative writing, science projects, maths problem-solving, or visual art, depending on the programme's focus.

Practical implication: If your child's cognitive test score falls slightly below a programme's published threshold, it is worth asking the school whether a complete multi-criteria review is available. A strong performance across the other criteria can sometimes support identification even when the test score alone would not. Never assume a single score is the final word.

What most gifted programmes are actually selecting for

Beneath the specific criteria, most gifted programmes are fundamentally trying to identify students who share a set of characteristics: the ability to learn new material quickly and at depth, the capacity to make connections across domains, a high tolerance for complexity and ambiguity, strong intrinsic motivation when genuinely challenged, and the ability to think abstractly at a level significantly above what's typical for their age.

None of these characteristics can be perfectly measured by any single instrument. The best gifted identification systems use multiple measures precisely because they're trying to build a complete portrait of a child — not just count how many items they got right on a particular Tuesday morning.

How to support your child through the process

Understanding that identification is multi-criteria changes what it makes sense to focus on. Beyond helping your child become familiar with cognitive test formats (which matters and is worth doing), equally valuable is supporting the development of the characteristics that gifted programmes are looking for in the first place: curiosity, reasoning habits, the ability to sustain attention on challenging problems, and the vocabulary to express complex thinking.

These are not things you can manufacture in the weeks before a test. They develop over time, through the daily habits of intellectual life at home — conversations, reading, puzzles, questions, and the modelling of what it looks like to think carefully about hard problems.
